March 9 (WD) New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a significant reduction in the price of non-subsidised cooking gas LPG, with a cut of Rs 100 per cylinder.
This move aims to ease the financial burden on households, especially benefiting women and families across the country. The reduced price of Rs 803 per 14.2-kg cylinder in the national capital is effective immediately.
The reduction in LPG prices is attributed to the easing of international oil and gas prices, against which domestic fuel rates are benchmarked. This marks the second reduction in cooking gas prices in six months, following a previous cut of Rs 200 per cylinder in late August.
While petrol and diesel prices remain unchanged for a record 23 months, the government has extended the subsidy of Rs 300 per LPG cylinder to beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for another year until March 2025. This subsidy extension is expected to benefit nearly 10 crore families and will cost the government Rs 12,000 crore.
The government’s efforts to make cooking gas more affordable align with its commitment to empowering women and ensuring ‘Ease of Living’ for all citizens. The reduction in LPG prices is seen as a step towards supporting the well-being of families and promoting a healthier environment.
